Give your friends the Boot with a Walnut Cane!
I wanted to design a cane that has two positions. The initial position, having the boot as the handle and then turning the cane upside down with the boot on the ground which allows the cane to be free standing. With this in mind, I knew that I had to create a secondary handle. I wove a “Heel Knot” over the standard rubber stopper with parachute cord. The main body of the cane is a Douglas fir Christmas tree trunk which cracked in the drying process. Instead of trashing the piece, I decided to make it appear laced. I drilled a series of holes, glued leather strips in each hole to give the appearance that the cane is laced. I continued the lace look onto the boot using the same technique as on the cane however in order to give it an authentic look I needed silver pony beads to act as rivets. The boot is made from American walnut using woodworking tools and power carving techniques. In the closeup, you will notice that I used my wood burner to create the stitch work. Finally, to complete the cane I carved the tread on the bottom of the boot.
