Elle’s Desk
The desk is built from Tom McLaughlin’s Epic Woodworking project, Modern Writing Desk, and is submitted with his permission. The legs and dividers are QS sapele and the top and drawer fronts and side apron panels are very spalted, wormy maple found in the bottom of a woodpile in a friends pole barn that required a lot of resuscitation for the project. There are few flat surfaces with all legs contoured and pillowed and the perimeter of the desk top tapered several inches to the flat working surface. Pulls are shop made sapele. The desk itself is very light but extremely sturdy, joined with a total of 32 double tenons and mortices for all vertical and horizontal dividers. Legs and dividers are finished with sprayed shellac with the desktop finished with Waterlox Original. Overall, it was a wonderful project completed from Tom’s beautiful design and outstanding instruction that will last my granddaughter a lifetime and hopefully be passed on.
